Daejeo Tomatoes — Busan, Korea

Sourced directly from Daejeo-dong, Busan, these small-sized tomatoes are known for their unique salty-sweet flavour — a result of the area's naturally high soil salinity. Also known as "Jjapjjari tomatoes" (jjada meaning salty in Korean), they are a beloved regional specialty grown only in this area.

GAP Certified | Seasonal Availability: March to May only

Why Daejeo Tomatoes?

  • The smaller the tomato, the more intense the flavour — and the higher the value
  • Best enjoyed when half green, half red for the fullest salty-sweet taste
  • Only available once a year, making them a true seasonal treat

Pack Sizes

  • 1kg — approximately 10–15 tomatoes
  • 2.5kg — approximately 25 tomatoes

Handling & Ripening Instructions Tomatoes may arrive green, this is intentional to preserve freshness during delivery. Simply leave them at room temperature for 2–3 days until they ripen and turn red. Refrigerate once ripened.

    Product FAQ

What makes Daejeo tomatoes special? A: Daejeo tomatoes are a regional specialty grown exclusively in Daejeo-dong, Busan- a coastal area where the naturally high soil salinity produces a tomato unlike any other. Known in Korea as jjapjjari tomatoes (jjada means salty in Korean), they have a distinctive salty-sweet flavour that regular tomatoes cannot replicate. They are also GAP certified by Korea's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (MAFRA).

My tomatoes arrived green. Is something wrong? A: Not at all, this is intentional. Daejeo tomatoes are harvested slightly underripe to ensure they survive distribution without bruising or over-softening.

When is the best time to eat them? A: Daejeo tomatoes are at their flavour peak when they are half green and half red. This is not underripe, it is the optimal stage where the salty-sweet balance is most pronounced. Once fully red they are still delicious but the signature saltiness is slightly less intense.

Are these tomatoes GAP certified? A: Yes. Daejeo tomatoes are GAP certified by MAFRA — Korea's Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs. GAP certification means the farming practices have been independently verified to meet government standards for pesticide management, water quality, and safe agricultural practices from planting through harvest.

How many tomatoes are in 1kg? A: Each pack contains approximately 10–15 tomatoes depending on their natural size. Daejeo tomatoes are intentionally smaller than standard tomatoes and in Korea, the smaller ones actually command a higher price because the flavour concentration is greater per bite.
